Year One

January 2nd, 2012 by Onavo Team

As the year comes to an end, we wanted to share our journey with you, and say Thank you for being a part of it.

After the launch, TNW's Martin Bryant interviews Guy RosenOur journey actually started in 2010 (when our two co-founders joined forces), but it was mostly behind the scenes and in stealth. In February 2011, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we unveiled our beta program, for an iPhone app that months later will change the way we perceive mobile data. Two months later, we launched our Money-saving, must have app for EVERY iPhone data user to the world on stage at TNW Conference, winning Best Mobile App and People’s Choice Awards!

The weekend after the launch was a crazy one, as our entire team was ‘burning the midnight oil’, working to welcome hundreds of thousands of users, addressing feature requests, adding iPad support and replying to your support emails. Soon after the press started noticing us, with mentions in TechCrunch, CNN, MSN, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, CNET, Wired, Gizmodo, Lifehacker, TNW, Dvice, TUAW, GigaOM, RWW, iFanr, 20minutes, BBC and many others.

A month after the launch, we announced our first round of funding, led by Sequoia Capital and Magma Venture Partners. Towards the end of June we opened the Android beta program, which was quickly filled with over 2,000 participants, all eager to help us release an Android version. On August 30th, we introduced Onavo for Android, The Best Damn Data Monitoring App for Android. Period‘, an important milestone for the company – now offering mobile data management apps to the most popular platforms in the industry.

Roi Tiger with the Meffys Award in LondonWe were overwhelmed by the positive feedback to our latest app, which addressed the background data leakage issue on Android devices, providing easy monitoring and management capabilities. Our community was most helpful throughout the process, and still is, in identifying small bugs and suggesting ideas for new features with some are added to our roadmap. Later in the year, we strengthened our Android offering by introducing a crowd sourcing engine and a real-time data usage widget – both a first on this platform.

Product wise, we continued working on both platforms, releasing app updates every 6-8 weeks with new features and bug fixes. Concurrently, we started exploring other platforms, released several Onavo Insights reports and infographics about mobile data usage and were invited to speak and share our story around the world.

Our Twitter account and Facebook page were also action-filled, as our users shared savings with their network, referred iPhone and Android users to download our app, posted questions and praises and much more.

It’s been an exciting year for us, and we’d like to thank you for joining the ride! Can’t wait to show you what we have planned for 2012….
Happy New Year from all of us here at Onavo.
